Description

The Ochrosia fruit fly (Bactrocera ochrosiae) is a member of the Tephritidae family within the order Diptera. This species is a significant pest primarily distributed in the Pacific region, particularly on the Bonin and Mariana Islands, where it poses a direct threat to agricultural productivity.

This fly species infests a wide range of host plants, especially tropical and subtropical fruit trees. Key host crops include mango, guava, papaya, breadfruit, and various citrus species. Due to its high reproductive potential and ability to adapt to diverse fruits, it is considered a major economic threat in affected areas.

The biological cycle of this pest involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female lays eggs under the skin of ripening fruit. The larvae emerge and tunnel through the flesh, consuming it and causing rapid tissue breakdown. Once fully developed, the larvae emerge from the fruit and pupate in the soil beneath the host plant.

Damage caused by this pest leads to significant yield losses. Infested fruits often show signs of oviposition punctures, soft spots, and premature drop. The larval tunneling facilitates the entry of secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, leading to rot that renders the fruit completely inedible and unsuitable for trade or export.

Control strategies for the Ochrosia fruit fly include rigorous quarantine measures to prevent spread to unaffected regions. Field management involves the use of male-attractant traps for monitoring and suppression, as well as protein bait sprays.
