Description
Taxonomic classification: The olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is recognized globally as the most devastating pest affecting olive production, causing significant economic losses in both commercial and domestic orchards.
Affected crops: The species is a monophagous pest, meaning it feeds exclusively on the fruits of the olive tree (Olea europaea). Due to this narrow host specificity, the pest thrives wherever olives are cultivated, often leading to total yield destruction if left uncontrolled.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle comprises egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages, with several generations occurring per year depending on temperature and humidity. The female fly deposits eggs directly beneath the fruit skin. Larvae develop internally, passing through three instars before pupating inside the fruit or emerging to pupate in the soil.
Damage and pest significance: Larval feeding causes direct physical damage, creating tunnels within the olive flesh. This triggers premature fruit drop and allows the entry of pathogens that cause rot. Consequently, the affected fruit loses its market value, and the resulting oil exhibits high acidity and poor sensory quality.
Protection measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Bactrocera oleae populations:
- deploying pheromone traps and protein baits for mass trapping and population monitoring;
- applying targeted insecticide sprays based on economic threshold levels;
- releasing biological control agents like parasitoid wasps;
- implementing sound orchard sanitation, such as the removal and destruction of infested fallen fruit.
