Bactrocera opiliae is a species of fruit fly belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is recognized as a significant pest in agricultural regions where it impacts the productivity of fruit-bearing plants, specifically those within its native distribution range.
The fly primarily infests hosts such as Opilia amentacea, but it also demonstrates the capacity to affect a range of commercial fruit crops. Its presence is of major concern for horticultural sectors, requiring strict monitoring protocols to prevent its spread to uninfested areas.
The biological cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult female deposits eggs into the fruit tissue, where the larvae hatch and begin feeding on the internal pulp. The duration of this cycle is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly humidity and temperature levels.
Damage caused by this pest is extensive. The larvae cause rapid tissue breakdown within the fruit, leading to premature fruit drop and decomposition. These infestations often result in severe yield losses and pose a threat to international trade due to quarantine regulations.
