Description

The Fijian fruit fly (Bactrocera passiflorae) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is considered a significant agricultural pest primarily found in the Fiji Islands and parts of the South Pacific region.

This species infests a wide range of fruit and vegetable crops. Primary host plants include papaya, mango, citrus varieties, guava, and various species of passion fruit, which is the origin of the scientific name passiflorae.

The lifecycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female fly deposits her eggs beneath the skin of ripening or mature fruits. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the fruit tissue, feeding internally and causing the fruit to rot from the inside out.

The primary damage includes premature fruit drop, internal tissue decay, and total loss of commercial value. Because the pest can complete multiple generations annually in tropical climates, it poses a severe threat to local fruit production and international trade, often leading to quarantine restrictions.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach:

  • Regular monitoring using male attractant (pheromone) traps.
  • Strict sanitation protocols, including the collection and deep burial or destruction of fallen infested fruit.
  • Use of bait sprays containing protein hydrolysates and systemic insecticides where permitted.
  • Physical exclusion techniques, such as bagging individual fruits on the trees to prevent oviposition.
Quarantine regulations and movement controls of fresh produce are vital to prevent the spread of this pest to non-infested areas.
