Description
The Queensland fruit fly (Bactrocera tryoni) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Tephritidae family. Native to Australia, it is recognized globally as a high-risk invasive species due to its destructive impact on fruit production and its ability to rapidly establish populations in diverse environments.
This pest is highly polyphagous, attacking a vast array of horticultural crops. Major hosts include stone fruits (peaches, plums), pome fruits (apples, pears), citrus varieties, and many tropical fruits, as well as several vegetable species such as tomatoes. Its ability to infest so many hosts makes it a constant threat to agricultural biosecurity.
The life cycle consists of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Female flies insert their ovipositor into the host fruit to deposit eggs. The larvae tunnel into the fruit to feed, which leads to tissue collapse. Once mature, the larvae leave the fruit to pupate in the soil, emerging later as adult flies to start the cycle again.
The damage is characterized by sting marks on the fruit's surface, followed by localized decay and rapid softening of the tissue. Infested fruits often drop prematurely from the tree. Internally, the flesh is completely destroyed by the tunneling larvae, rendering the fruit unfit for market or consumption.
Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include:
- Regular monitoring using male attractant and female protein baits.
- Strict orchard hygiene, including the prompt removal and disposal of fallen fruit.
- Application of bait sprays to kill adults before they can oviposit.
- Implementation of quarantine zones and sterile insect technique programs to suppress populations.
