Description
The Japanese citrus fly (Bactrocera tsuneonis) is a member of the Tephritidae family within the order Diptera. As a significant agricultural pest, it is recognized as a major quarantine threat to citrus-producing regions globally, capable of devastating commercial crops.
Its primary hosts consist of various citrus species, with a strong preference for mandarins and related hybrids. The fly is highly adapted to the specific phenology of citrus trees, synchronizing its life cycle with the development of fruit to ensure the survival of its offspring.
The life cycle involves an egg stage, three larval instars, pupation in the soil, and an adult stage. Females oviposit eggs under the flavedo of the fruit. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the pulp, consuming it as they grow, which creates a network of tunnels that eventually compromises the entire fruit structure.
Damage is often identified by soft, sunken spots on the fruit surface, frequently accompanied by premature fruit drop. Internally, the larval feeding results in the breakdown of fruit tissues, making the produce completely inedible and causing significant economic loss to farmers.
