Description

Bactrocera umbrosa is a destructive agricultural pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is recognized as a significant quarantine pest, capable of causing substantial economic losses to fruit production in regions where it is established, primarily throughout Southeast Asia and Oceania.

The primary host for this pest is the breadfruit tree (Artocarpus altilis), although it also infests other species within the Artocarpus genus, such as jackfruit. The larvae develop within the fruits at various stages of maturity, making this species a major threat to commercial fruit production.

The insect's life cycle comprises four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female deposits eggs beneath the skin of a ripening fruit using its ovipositor. Upon hatching, the larvae feed on the fruit pulp, creating numerous tunnels that cause the fruit to rot rapidly and drop prematurely from the tree.

The damage is typically characterized by dark spots on the fruit's surface and softening of the internal tissues. Infested fruits usually contain multiple larvae that complete their development before exiting the fruit to pupate in the soil beneath the host plant, rendering the crop entirely unmarketable.

Control measures primarily focus on strict phytosanitary regulations during the import of fresh produce. In cultivation areas, management strategies include:

  • The use of pheromone traps for population monitoring
  • Prompt disposal and destruction of fallen fruit
  • Application of insecticides combined with protein baits to attract and eliminate adults
