Description
Bactrocera xanthodes is a prominent species of fruit fly belonging to the Tephritidae family, order Diptera. This insect is recognized as a major pest in many tropical and subtropical areas, causing significant disruption to agricultural production and international trade due to its status as a quarantine organism.
The host range of this species is extensive, including a variety of economically important fruits and vegetables. It frequently attacks papaya, mango, citrus, breadfruit, and guava, among others. Its polyphagous nature allows it to establish populations in diverse habitats, making it a persistent threat to both commercial orchards and small-scale horticultural farming.
The life cycle of Bactrocera xanthodes consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female fly inserts her eggs beneath the surface of the fruit's skin. Upon hatching, the larvae feed internally on the pulp, destroying the fruit structure from within. Once larval development is complete, they exit the fruit to pupate in the soil.

Larval feeding destroys the edible portion of the fruit and introduces secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens, which accelerate decay.
