Description
The Bactrocera zonata, commonly known as the peach fruit fly, belongs to the Diptera order and the Tephritidae family. It is a highly destructive quarantine pest recognized globally for its ability to cause severe economic losses in fruit and vegetable production across tropical and subtropical zones.
This species is highly polyphagous, infesting a wide range of crops including peaches, apricots, mangoes, guava, citrus, and various vegetables. Its capability to adapt to different hosts makes it a persistent threat to agricultural stability in affected regions, frequently leading to export bans and strict quarantine restrictions.
The lifecycle of the peach fruit fly consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females pierce the fruit skin to deposit eggs, and the resulting larvae feed internally on the fruit pulp. The entire generation cycle can be completed in as little as 20 to 30 days during warm summer months, allowing for rapid population explosions.
The damage caused by the larvae results in fruit rotting and premature abscission. Because the larvae remain hidden inside the fruit, detection is difficult until the fruit begins to show signs of decay or exit holes, making it particularly challenging to manage once an infestation is established in an orchard.
