These leafhoppers possess specialized mouthparts adapted for piercing plant tissues and extracting sap, which characterizes their feeding behavior within the Poaceae family.

Host plants. The primary targets of this pest are various cereal crops, including wheat, barley, oats, and millet. Additionally, Balclutha neglecta frequently inhabits wild grasses found in field margins, which serve as a continuous food source and a shelter for the population throughout the growing season.
