Barbastelle

The Barbastelle (Barbastella barbastellus) is a species of bat belonging to the family Vespertilionidae. While it is an insectivorous animal and not a pest of crops, its presence in agricultural infrastructures such as barns, grain stores, and old farmhouses is a subject of concern for agricultural managers focused on facility hygiene and structural maintenance.

The biology of this species is complex, characterized by specific roosting requirements. They are known for their ability to hide in very narrow crevices, such as gaps in wooden cladding, tree bark, or cracks in building masonry. This behavior often leads them to settle in areas where agricultural operations take place, especially in proximity to forests or large gardens.

The impact on agricultural activity is strictly related to structural and sanitary issues. The accumulation of bat guano in confined spaces can be hazardous. The acidic nature of the waste can accelerate the degradation of building materials, while the organic matter creates an environment conducive to the development of mold, which can affect the quality of stored grain or fodder.

The damage caused by the species is typically limited to the fouling of equipment and storage areas. In high-density roosting scenarios, the smell and potential hygiene violations require attention, particularly in facilities certified for food safety, where the presence of wild animals must be strictly controlled to prevent contamination.

Management strategies focus on physical exclusion and habitat modification rather than extermination:
