Barentsia (genus Barentsia) belongs to the phylum Kamptozoa, family Barentsiidae. These organisms are sedentary, colonial invertebrates characterized by a stalked structure and a terminal calyx with a crown of tentacles. They are common inhabitants of marine and brackish environments, often found attached to solid substrates.
Within the context of aquaculture and marine management, Barentsia is recognized as a biofouling pest. While it does not affect terrestrial plants, it poses a significant threat to aquaculture infrastructure. Its colonial nature allows it to colonize submerged nets, mussel lines, and water intake structures, causing economic losses in the farming sector.
The biology of Barentsia relies on an efficient vegetative growth strategy via stolons. Individuals, known as zooids, feed by filtering suspended particles from the water column.
