Bellura densa, commonly referred to as the cattail borer moth, is a moth species belonging to the Noctuidae family. While it plays a role in natural ecosystems, it is frequently identified as a pest when it affects aquatic crops or ornamental water plants, causing significant stress to the host vegetation.

Taxonomically, the insect is classified within the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. The adult moth is relatively small, with cryptic coloration that allows it to blend into the vegetation along pond banks and marshes, making it difficult to detect during standard monitoring procedures.

The pest primarily targets aquatic plants, with a strong preference for members of the Typha genus (cattails) and certain invasive species like water hyacinth. The larvae are the main destructive stage, as they possess specialized mandibles adapted for boring into the stems and rhizomes of aquatic hosts.

Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the tissue, creating tunnels where they feed and develop throughout their larval stages. In severe infestations, the internal damage leads to the decay of the plant structure.
