Description
Systematic position. Blepharidopterus victoris belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae (plant bugs). As a member of this diverse family, it acts as a pest of various woody plants, often overlooked in standard pest scouting until damage becomes significant.
Affected crops. The pest predominantly targets deciduous trees. Common hosts include fruit trees like apple and pear, as well as forest species such as alder and birch. It is particularly damaging in nurseries where the loss of foliage on young plants directly impacts growth and vigor.
Biology and life cycle. The species overwinters primarily in the egg stage, with eggs embedded in the plant bark or near buds. Upon hatching in the spring, nymphs begin feeding on fresh vegetation.
