Blepharipa

Blepharipa is a genus of flies belonging to the family Tachinidae (order Diptera). These insects are renowned in the field of entomology as specialized parasitoids. Unlike typical plant pests, they play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance by targeting the larvae of various Lepidoptera species that cause significant damage to crops, forests, and gardens.

These flies primarily impact host larvae, including various types of moths and caterpillars. In agricultural environments, their presence is often observed in areas where pest populations are high. While the adult fly feeds on nectar and pollen, the larvae are strictly parasitic, meaning the genus acts as a natural regulator of caterpillar populations rather than a direct consumer of agricultural produce.

The lifecycle of Blepharipa is highly synchronized with its host. The female fly deposits eggs on the host or its food source, and upon hatching, the larva bores into the caterpillar's body. By feeding on the internal tissues, the parasite gradually kills the host.
