Silver bream

The silver bream (Blicca bjoerkna) is a member of the Cyprinidae family in the order Cypriniformes. In the context of industrial agriculture and aquaculture, this species is sometimes categorized as a pest due to its disruptive impact on managed water environments, irrigation ponds, and closed-loop aquaculture systems.

The species causes damage to aquatic crops and managed ecosystems by consuming submerged vegetation and disturbing the substrate on the bottom of ponds. This behavior contributes to increased water turbidity and nutrient fluctuation, which negatively affects the quality of water used for agricultural irrigation and the health of other desired species.

Regarding its biology, the silver bream is highly resilient with a rapid reproductive cycle. Following the spawning period, large numbers of juveniles can quickly overpopulate a confined water body. This rapid population growth depletes essential nutrients and oxygen levels, negatively impacting the efficiency of the entire agricultural facility.

The harmful impact is primarily observed in the physical obstruction of irrigation infrastructure. By constantly foraging and digging into the silt on the pond floor, the fish suspends sediment particles in the water. These particles are then drawn into pumping systems, leading to the clogging of drip irrigation nozzles and increased wear on filtration equipment.

Control measures primarily focus on the physical exclusion of the fish from irrigation reservoirs using fine-mesh screens and intake filters. Additionally, biological control methods, such as introducing predatory fish to manage population densities, and seasonal drainage for pond maintenance are recommended to minimize the impact of this species on farm productivity.
