Description
Systematic position: The flax flea beetle (Aphthona euphorbiae) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is a specialized pest that is particularly problematic in regions where linseed or flax is grown intensively, posing a significant risk to crop establishment.
Host crops: While the primary host is common flax, the pest exhibits a broad polyphagous behavior. It is known to infest a variety of crops including winter rapeseed, fodder beet, potato, and small grains like winter barley and winter wheat, especially during the early stages of plant development.
Biology and life cycle: The adult beetles overwinter in the soil or under debris. As temperatures rise in early spring, they emerge and begin feeding on young foliage. Eggs are laid in the soil near the host plants; the larvae subsequently hatch and feed on the roots, which can cause significant physiological stress to the young plants.
Damage and pest status: The adults chew characteristic small, circular holes in the leaves, known as shot-holing. This damage reduces the leaf area available for photosynthesis, stunting plant growth. Severe infestations are particularly dangerous during the seedling stage, often resulting in complete crop failure and forcing farmers to perform reseeding.
