Systematic position. Boettcherisca is a genus belonging to the order Diptera and the family Sarcophagidae, commonly known as flesh flies. While many members of this family are known as decomposers, in agricultural settings, some species can act as opportunistic pests, interacting with plant tissues and potentially transmitting pathogens that compromise crop health.

Crops affected. This fly does not typically attack healthy, vigorous plants but rather targets vegetables and fruits that have already sustained damage or are in a state of decay. Common hosts include tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, especially when grown in greenhouses or in field conditions with high moisture and excessive plant residues.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Boettcherisca includes egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. A notable biological trait is that many species are larviparous, depositing live larvae onto the host medium. Their development is rapid, depending on temperature and nutrient availability, allowing for multiple generations during the peak growing season.

Damage character and economic importance. The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which feed on succulent plant tissues, rapidly accelerating decomposition. Beyond the direct loss of harvestable products, their presence facilitates secondary bacterial and fungal infections. This often leads to severe crop losses, particularly during the post-harvest storage phase where rotting spreads quickly.
