Boxelder bug

Systematic position. The boxelder bug, belonging to the genus Boisea, is classified within the order Hemiptera and the family Rhopalidae. These insects are well-known pests that frequently associate with specific host trees, exhibiting distinct behavioral patterns during seasonal changes.

Crops affected. The primary host plant is the boxelder maple (Acer negundo). While they are specialized to maples, they may occasionally be found on other tree species such as silver maple or ash. In some cases, they have been observed feeding on the developing fruit of orchards, including grapes and peaches, causing minor aesthetic or structural damage.

Biology and life cycle. Boxelder bugs overwinter as adults in protected locations, such as building crevices, hollow trees, or deep leaf litter. In the spring, they emerge to lay eggs on the leaves and bark of host trees. The nymphs go through several molting stages, appearing throughout the summer, before the adults prepare for another migration in late autumn.

Nature of damage and pest status. While their feeding rarely kills large, established trees, they are considered nuisance pests. The real impact occurs when large numbers of bugs invade homes and structures in the fall. If crushed, they can release a foul-smelling liquid and leave reddish-brown fecal stains on light-colored surfaces like house sidings and curtains.

Protection measures. Managing boxelder bugs involves a combination of structural and chemical approaches:

• Seal all cracks, crevices, and entry points around windows, doors, and foundations to prevent indoor access.
• Remove or prune back host trees near buildings to reduce the population density.
• Use residual insecticides labeled for perimeter treatments to deter bugs from gathering on house walls.
• Vacuuming or sweeping up large aggregations of bugs when they appear on exterior surfaces.
