Bolma
Bolma
Description
The genus Bolma belongs to the family Turbinidae and represents a group of marine gastropod mollusks. While the majority of these species are confined to marine environments, their occasional presence in coastal agroecosystems necessitates careful identification and monitoring. Taxonomically, they are categorized within the order Trochida, characterized by their robust, spiral shells and calcified operculum.
The range of plants susceptible to damage from such gastropods is typically restricted to coastal zones where irrigation with brackish water occurs or where salt-affected soils are present. These mollusks may feed on the young shoots of coastal vegetation, algae used for soil enrichment, or ornamental species cultivated in high-salinity environments.
The biology of Bolma is strictly tied to aquatic conditions. These are dioecious organisms, and their life cycle includes a planktonic larval stage known as a veliger. Development is highly dependent on water salinity, temperature, and the availability of primary food sources such as microalgae. Under optimal environmental conditions, populations can increase rapidly, placing significant stress on local vegetation.
The damage caused by these mollusks is typically characterized by tissue scraping using the radula, a specialized rasping organ. This activity leads to the degradation of plant epidermal tissues, which subsequently leaves the plant vulnerable to secondary infections, soft rot, and various fungal pathogens. In cases of high infestation, they can severely stunt the growth of young saplings and ornamental crops.
Effective management and protection strategies focus on strictly monitoring soil salinity levels and the quality of irrigation water. Practical control methods include the installation of mechanical barriers, such as copper tape or gravel barriers, which hinder the movement of the gastropods. In situations where significant crop damage is observed, the application of specialized molluscicides approved for agricultural use is recommended.
