Description
The bee fly (genus Bombylius) belongs to the family Bombyliidae, which is a diverse group of dipteran insects. Often confused with honeybees due to their mimicry, these flies play a complex role in agricultural environments. While adults are efficient pollinators, their larval stage involves parasitism of other insects, which can disrupt local ecosystems.
Taxonomically, they are part of the order Diptera. Adults are recognized by their dense, furry appearance and a long, rigid proboscis adapted for nectar feeding while hovering. Their mimicry serves as a defensive mechanism to deter predators by appearing like stinging Hymenoptera.
