Description

Borborus similis (often referred to as a type of lesser dung fly) belongs to the family Sphaeroceridae within the order Diptera. While primarily known as decomposers in natural environments, these flies can behave as secondary pests in agricultural settings, specifically targeting nursery plants and greenhouse vegetable production where organic matter is abundant.

The insect thrives in environments characterized by high humidity and the presence of decomposing plant material or manure. In greenhouse conditions, Borborus similis can transition from saprophagous feeding to phytophagous activity if the population density is high and suitable organic food sources become limited, leading them to attack young seedlings.

The life cycle of this species consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The adults are highly mobile and attracted to moist, organic-rich environments to oviposit. The larval stage is the most critical period, as larvae burrow into soil or growing media.
