Bowerbankia is a genus belonging to the phylum Bryozoa, class Gymnolaemata, order Ctenostomatida, and family Vesiculariidae. These colonial organisms often mimic the appearance of algae or fungal growths, forming fine, branching, thread-like structures that colonize various submerged substrates.

This organism poses a significant threat primarily to aquaculture, water supply systems, and marine hydro-technical structures. In an agricultural and aquaculture context, Bowerbankia damages fish and shellfish cages, and can aggressively overgrow the submerged components of essential farming equipment.

The biology of Bowerbankia is characterized by rapid vegetative growth. A colony consists of numerous individuals known as zooids, connected by a common stem or stolon. During development, they attach to a substrate using adhesive secretions and actively filter-feed on organic particles, allowing them to rapidly cover large surface areas.

The economic impact of this pest lies in the formation of dense biofouling layers. These layers physically block oxygen and nutrient flow to aquaculture stocks. Furthermore, the weight of the colonies increases structural load, promotes corrosion on metallic parts, and significantly complicates the maintenance of farming gear.

Management strategies focus on mechanical cleaning and the application of anti-fouling coatings. Effective prevention involves maintaining high water quality and regular monitoring of submerged gear. On an industrial scale, ultrasonic emitters are used to prevent the larvae of these bryozoans from successfully settling and attaching to equipment surfaces.
