Bowerbankia is a genus belonging to the phylum Bryozoa, class Gymnolaemata, order Ctenostomatida, and family Vesiculariidae. These colonial organisms often mimic the appearance of algae or fungal growths, forming fine, branching, thread-like structures that colonize various submerged substrates.

This organism poses a significant threat primarily to aquaculture, water supply systems, and marine hydro-technical structures. In an agricultural and aquaculture context, Bowerbankia damages fish and shellfish cages, and can aggressively overgrow the submerged components of essential farming equipment.

The biology of Bowerbankia is characterized by rapid vegetative growth. A colony consists of numerous individuals known as zooids, connected by a common stem or stolon. During development, they attach to a substrate using adhesive secretions and actively filter-feed on organic particles, allowing them to rapidly cover large surface areas.
