Systematic position. Brachycaudina belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a group of small, specialized sap-sucking insects that have adapted to parasitize various plant species, significantly impacting their normal developmental cycles and growth vigor.

Host plants and damage symptoms. The primary targets for Brachycaudina are various plants from the Asteraceae family. The damage manifests as leaf curling, chlorosis, and stunted growth of shoots. As these insects feed on phloem sap, they extract vital nutrients from the host plant, leading to overall weakness and a reduction in the aesthetic or agricultural value of the infested crop.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Brachycaudina is characterized by rapid reproductive phases, allowing them to form large colonies within a short period. The population consists of wingless and winged forms, enabling both local colonization of a single plant and dispersal to neighboring fields. The rate of reproduction is largely dependent on favorable climatic conditions, such as warm spring temperatures.

Economic importance. Brachycaudina acts as a serious threat not only through direct feeding but also as a vector for various plant viruses. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the colonization of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight from reaching the leaf surface, thereby severely inhibiting the process of photosynthesis and causing further stress to the plant.

Protection measures. Managing Brachycaudina requires an integrated pest management approach to minimize damage effectively:

• Regular scouting of plants to monitor for the first signs of aphid infestation.
• Utilization of selective insecticides when infestation thresholds are exceeded.
