Description
Brachycentrus maculatus belongs to the order Trichoptera and the family Brachycentridae. While most caddisflies are benign, specific species like this one can become pests in controlled aquatic environments, including hydroponic greenhouses, aquaculture systems, and nurseries for aquatic flora.
The organism primarily damages submerged plants and seedlings. In artificial aquatic conditions, the larvae feed on delicate root systems, young stems, and foliage, which leads to stunted growth, loss of aesthetic value in ornamental plants, and reduced survival rates in crop cultivation systems.
The lifecycle follows a complete metamorphosis pattern: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Larvae are known for constructing distinct square-shaped protective cases made of organic debris and silk. The larval stage is relatively long, which allows the insect to exert a persistent impact on plant health within a confined aquatic habitat.
Damage symptoms include leaf skeletonization, ragged edges on leaves, and severe chewing damage to roots. Because larvae use plant materials for their protective cases, they often cut and strip away tissues from healthy plants, causing localized necrosis and increased susceptibility to secondary infections in the plant tissue.
Effective management includes mechanical exclusion and environmental monitoring. Growers should install fine-mesh intake filters to prevent larvae from entering the cultivation tanks. Regular physical inspection and removal of larvae from submerged structures, combined with maintaining optimal water flow, are the most recommended non-toxic strategies for prevention.
