Asparagus aphid
Brachycorynella asparagi
Description
The asparagus aphid (Brachycorynella asparagi) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is considered one of the most serious threats to both commercial and home-grown asparagus plantations worldwide.
This insect is a host-specific pest, feeding exclusively on asparagus (Asparagus officinalis). By extracting plant sap, it disrupts the normal physiological processes of the crop, leading to stunted growth and reduced vigor of the entire plantation.
The life cycle of Brachycorynella asparagi involves both sexual and asexual phases. Overwintering occurs in the egg stage on dry fern stalks. As temperatures rise in spring, nymphs emerge and start colonizing the tender young asparagus spears, quickly forming dense colonies through rapid asexual reproduction.
The damage caused by these aphids is distinct: the affected tips of the shoots become stunted, clustered, and curled, forming a characteristic «shepherd's crook» shape. This damage prevents proper fern development, which reduces the amount of nutrients stored in the rhizomes for the following year's production.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Key strategies include:
- thorough sanitation by removing and destroying old infested ferns after harvest;
- early-season monitoring to detect the first signs of colonization;
- targeted application of systemic insecticides when the economic threshold is exceeded.
