Often referred to as the "lubber grasshopper" or "plains lubber," this insect is characterized by its large, robust body and reduced, non-functional wings. Because they are flightless, populations remain localized, often causing severe, concentrated damage within specific fields.

Taxonomically, this pest is distinct from migratory locusts. Its inability to migrate over long distances means that infestations are typically the result of local population buildup over several seasons.
