These microscopic arthropods are common inhabitants of moist soils and organic debris, but they can reach pest status in agricultural settings, particularly in nurseries and greenhouse environments where conditions remain consistently damp.

This pest primarily impacts seedlings, young transplants, and various ornamental plants. It is particularly problematic in systems using peat-based or organic-rich substrates, as these materials provide both food and the high-humidity environment that Brachystomella requires to thrive and reproduce.

The biology of Brachystomella is characterized by rapid development in favorable conditions, typically involving high soil moisture and warm temperatures. Because these insects do not have a pupal stage, their populations can explode quickly if management practices fail to restrict moisture levels or eliminate the accumulation of decaying organic matter.

By feeding on these tender tissues, the pests weaken the plant's structural integrity and create entry points for soil-borne pathogens, often resulting in "damping-off" symptoms, stunted growth, and sudden plant wilting.
