The brown-throated sloth (Bradypus variegatus) is a mammal belonging to the order Pilosa and the family Bradypodidae. While generally perceived as harmless, this species can act as a minor agricultural pest when plantations are established in close proximity to their natural habitats, potentially impacting tree health in tropical regions.

The primary diet of this species consists of leaves from various arboreal plants. Within an agricultural context, sloths may cause damage to young cocoa, coffee, and certain citrus trees. By consuming young leaves and terminal buds, they hinder the vegetative growth of seedlings, which is a critical phase for the establishment of productive plantations.

The biology of Bradypus variegatus is characterized by an exceptionally low metabolic rate and a slow lifecycle. They are strictly arboreal and spend almost their entire lives in the forest canopy. However, their dietary habits are adaptable, and in areas where natural forest cover is fragmented, they may shift their feeding pressure onto commercial tree crops.

The nature of damage involves defoliation and mechanical injury to young branches. The economic significance is primarily observed in nurseries or young orchards where plant loss or reduced growth rates directly affect the expected yield. While rarely causing catastrophic damage, chronic feeding can weaken individual trees over time.

  • installation of smooth metal collars around tree trunks to prevent climbing;
  • maintenance of forest corridors to keep sloths away from high-value crop areas;
