Brahmaea wallichii

Description

Systematic position. Brahmaea wallichii belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Brahmaeidae. Often referred to as the Brahmaeid moth, it is a striking insect with a large wingspan characterized by intricate, wavy patterns on its wings, which provide excellent camouflage against tree bark.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, larval (caterpillar), pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on the host plant leaves. The larvae go through several instars, feeding voraciously. As they mature, the larvae develop distinct features, such as horn-like structures, which serve as a primary defense mechanism against potential predators in their natural habitat.

Affected crops. This species primarily infests plants belonging to the Oleaceae family. Key host plants include various species of Ligustrum (privet), Fraxinus (ash), and Syringa (lilac). While it is not always a major economic pest, it can cause aesthetic and physiological damage in ornamental nurseries and managed forests.

Damage and pest status. The damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which are heavy feeders. Young caterpillars start by skeletonizing the leaf surface, while later stages consume the entire leaf lamina. Heavy infestations can lead to significant defoliation, stressing the host tree and reducing its overall vitality, which makes the plant more susceptible to secondary infections or environmental stress.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is recommended to control Brahmaea wallichii. Regular monitoring of trees during the spring and summer is essential for early detection. Biological control agents, such as bacteria-based sprays, are effective against early-instar larvae. Chemical control should be reserved for severe outbreaks and applied according to local agricultural regulations to minimize impact on non-target species.

  • Manual removal of larvae in small-scale plantings.
  • Use of pheromone or light traps for population monitoring.
  • Application of Bacillus thuringiensis based bio-insecticides.
  • Maintaining healthy tree vigor to withstand minor foliage loss.
