Brent goose

The genus Branta, commonly known as geese, represents a group of waterfowl belonging to the family Anatidae within the order Anseriformes. In agricultural contexts, these birds are categorized as vertebrate pests during their migratory periods, as they often congregate on cultivated farmlands to feed on green forage.

Taxonomically, the genus includes species such as the Brent goose (Branta bernicla) and the Canada goose (Branta canadensis). Their biological cycle is dictated by long-distance migrations, during which they must rapidly accumulate fat reserves, leading them to rely heavily on nutrient-rich agricultural fields.

The primary crops damaged by these birds include winter cereals like wheat and barley, as well as oilseed rape. The birds graze on the foliage during the early vegetative stages, which can severely retard plant growth and reduce the final grain yield significantly if grazing is intensive.

The damage profile is characterized by patches of denuded soil where plants have been pulled out by the roots or grazed down to the crown. Beyond immediate biomass loss, the presence of large flocks causes soil compaction and contamination of the crop with droppings, which complicates harvest quality and can introduce pathogens to the field environment.

Management and protection strategies focus on non-lethal deterrent methods. Key practices include:

• Deployment of acoustic devices such as propane cannons to disrupt feeding patterns.
• Use of lasers, which are particularly effective at dawn and dusk.
• Installation of raptor-shaped kites or scarecrows to act as visual deterrents.
• Strategic timing of planting or leaving sacrificial buffer zones to divert the flocks away from primary high-value crops.
