Bremiola

Bremiola is a genus of insects belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae (gall midges), within the order Diptera. These small but impactful pests are known for inducing the formation of galls on host plants. As specialized phytophagous insects, they rely heavily on their host plants' physiological processes to survive and complete their development.

These pests primarily target species within the Asteraceae family, most notably the genus Helenium. The larvae settle on leaf tissues or developing buds, where they secrete substances that trigger abnormal cell proliferation. This result is the creation of galls, which provide the larvae with both physical protection from predators and a consistent food supply.

The biology of Bremiola is characterized by precise synchronization with the host plant's life cycle. The adult females lay eggs on the surface of young leaves or buds. Once the larvae emerge, they penetrate the plant tissue and initiate gall growth. This symbiotic yet damaging relationship ensures the larvae remain encased within the plant structure until they are ready to pupate.

The damage caused by Bremiola manifests as distinct swellings or distortions on leaves. The harmful impact of this infestation includes reduced photosynthetic capacity, stunted shoot growth, and a decrease in overall plant vigor.
