Description
Bremiola onobrychidis, commonly known as the sainfoin gall midge, is a specialized insect pest belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae (gall midges) within the order Diptera. This pest specifically targets sainfoin (Onobrychis species), causing significant damage to the floral structures and drastically reducing seed yield in forage production.
The primary hosts of this midge are plants of the genus Onobrychis. The larvae of the midge infest the developing flower buds of the plant. By feeding inside the bud, the larvae prevent normal flowering and seed development, which can result in near-total crop failure if left unmanaged during a high-infestation year.
The life cycle of the sainfoin gall midge is highly synchronized with the phenological development of its host plant. The insect typically overwinters in the soil as larvae or pupae within protective cocoons. In the spring, coinciding with the budding stage of the sainfoin, the adult midges emerge, mate, and lay eggs directly into the unopened flower buds.
The damage caused by the larvae is distinct: the buds become swollen and deformed, forming characteristic galls. These buds fail to bloom properly and often wither or fall off prematurely. Due to the larvae's protected position within the bud, they are shielded from many environmental factors and standard contact insecticides once inside.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Effective strategies include:
- Crop rotation to reduce the overwintering population density in the soil.
- Spatial separation of seed production fields from older, established sainfoin stands.
- Deep tillage practices after harvest to bury and destroy overwintering larvae.
- Timely application of systemic insecticides at the very beginning of the budding stage to target adults before they can oviposit.
