Lesser Marbled Fritillary

Brenthis ino

Description

The Lesser Marbled Fritillary (Latin: Brenthis ino) is a species of butterfly belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Nymphalidae. While primarily studied by entomologists, it is recognized as an agricultural pest due to its larval stage, which feeds on specific herbaceous plants found in or near cultivated agricultural land.

The species primarily affects plants within the Rosaceae family, specifically meadowsweet (Filipendula) species. In agricultural settings, these plants may grow along field margins or in buffer zones, acting as a habitat for the larvae. The consumption of leaf tissues by the caterpillars can hinder the development of these plants, which might serve as forage or biodiversity cover.

The life cycle of Brenthis ino involves a complete metamorphosis including egg, larva, pupa, and imago stages. Overwintering typically occurs in the larval stage. Upon the arrival of spring, larvae emerge and begin feeding on host plants, progressing through several instars before pupating, which usually happens near the base of the host plant.

The primary damage caused by the larvae is defoliation. By eating the leaf blades, the larvae reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the plant. In high-density populations, this can lead to weakened plants that are more susceptible to environmental stressors, although, in most agricultural scenarios, the impact is considered localized.

Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for this species focus on habitat management. Keeping field margins clear of excessive host weeds and managing the density of meadowsweet through mechanical mowing can effectively minimize populations. Biological control agents, including parasitic wasps or selective microbial insecticides, can also be employed if local populations reach a damaging threshold.
