Description
Brevennia rehi, commonly known as the rice mealybug, is a member of the Pseudococcidae family within the order Hemiptera. This sap-sucking insect has become a significant economic pest in rice-growing regions worldwide, causing considerable damage to crops by colonizing the sheaths of rice stems.
The primary host for this pest is rice (Oryza sativa). The insect feeds by inserting its stylets into the plant tissue, extracting sap and weakening the host plant. While rice is its main target, the pest can also survive on various wild grass species, which often serve as alternative hosts between cropping seasons.
The life cycle of Brevennia rehi is characterized by high reproductive rates. Females deposit eggs in protective wax-like ovisacs. The mobile nymphs, or crawlers, emerge and spread across the rice plants, specifically targeting the leaf sheaths. Their development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, allowing for multiple overlapping generations in tropical and temperate climates.
Damage caused by the rice mealybug manifests as yellowing, curling, and drying of the leaves. Infested plants show stunted growth, delayed maturity, and poor panicle development.
