Description
The genus Brigittea belongs to the family Tetranychidae (spider mites). These microscopic arthropods specialize in feeding on the sap of plant cells, which leads to significant physiological stress and structural damage to the host plants.
This pest is primarily found on herbaceous plants and shrubs. It causes substantial damage to vegetable crops, ornamental plants, and berry crops grown in both open fields and greenhouses, where the controlled environment favors rapid reproduction.
The biology of Brigittea is heavily influenced by ambient temperatures. The life cycle includes the stages of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. Under optimal temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius, a single generation can develop in just 7 to 10 days, leading to rapid population outbreaks.
Damage symptoms manifest as small, pale stippling on the upper side of the leaves, which eventually merge into bleached patches. Over time, the leaves turn yellow, desiccate, and fall off prematurely. The presence of fine webbing on the underside of the foliage is a primary diagnostic indicator of an infestation.
Control measures integrate both agrotechnical and chemical approaches. It is essential to manage weed populations that serve as alternative hosts and to maintain adequate humidity levels in growing spaces. In cases of high infestation, the use of specific acaricides is required, alternating between different chemical classes to mitigate the risk of resistance development.
