Description

The Lily borer (Brithys crini) is a significant moth species belonging to the Noctuidae family. This pest is notoriously known for its destructive impact on plants within the Amaryllidaceae family, often causing extensive damage to both cultivated and ornamental bulbs in tropical and subtropical environments.

The primary host plants for the Lily borer include various bulbs such as lilies, amaryllis, crinum, and hippeastrum. The larvae have specialized mouthparts designed to bore into the succulent stems and leaves of these plants, making them difficult to control once the infestation is established inside the tissue.

The life cycle of the moth involves complete metamorphosis. Eggs are usually laid in clusters on the foliage. Upon hatching, the larvae begin to feed immediately, moving from the surface into the interior of the stem. As they mature, they consume significant portions of the plant before descending into the soil to pupate.

The damage caused by the larvae is severe; they tunnel through leaves and flower stalks, leading to wilting, stunted growth, and total collapse of the plant. The internal feeding also exposes the plant to secondary bacterial and fungal infections, which often rot the bulb base and kill the entire plant.
