Description

The mallow flea beetle (Brooksetta althaeae) is a member of the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae) within the order Coleoptera. This small but destructive insect is primarily specialized in feeding on plants within the Malvaceae family, making it a significant pest for both ornamental gardens and wild patches of mallow.

The beetle host range is restricted mainly to the genera Malva and Althaea. Infestations are most common in areas where these plants are grown in density, as the insects prefer stable microclimates found in dense foliage to feed and reproduce efficiently throughout the warm months of the year.

Regarding its biology, the beetle overwinters as an adult in the soil or under debris. Once temperatures rise in the spring, the beetles emerge to feed on the tender young leaves of their host plants. Females lay eggs shortly thereafter, and the developing larvae continue to feed on plant tissues, often resulting in rapid population increases during the growing season.

The characteristic damage caused by Brooksetta althaeae involves small, circular holes (shot-hole damage) in the leaf blades. In cases of heavy infestation, the entire leaf surface can become skeletonized. This severe defoliation weakens the plant, hinders its ability to photosynthesize, and significantly compromises the overall decorative value and health of the plant.

Management strategies for this pest should focus on integrated pest management practices. Sanitation is key; clearing garden debris and removing wild mallow weeds can significantly disrupt the beetle's life cycle. For severe infestations, the application of targeted insecticides, carefully applied to foliage during peak beetle activity, is the most effective way to restore plant health.
