Avocado gall midge

The avocado gall midge (Bruggmanniella perseae) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. This tiny midge species targets avocado trees, causing substantial damage to developing fruits and posing a persistent challenge for commercial avocado production worldwide.

The primary host for Bruggmanniella perseae is the avocado tree (Persea americana). The pest is highly specialized, specifically targeting the fruit and reproductive structures, which directly impacts the commercial value of the crop by inducing malformation and reducing yield.

The biological cycle of the gall midge is closely tied to the avocado's fruiting stages. Female midges oviposit into the young fruit tissue. Upon hatching, larvae burrow inside the developing fruit, feeding on the inner tissues. The larvae undergo their developmental stages within the fruit, often creating protected environments that facilitate their survival and rapid population growth.

Damage caused by this pest is characterized by the formation of galls and irregular distortions on the surface of the fruit. These structural deformities not only impair the marketability of the avocado but also create entry points for secondary pathogens, which can accelerate fruit decay and lead to premature fruit drop in affected orchards.
