Description

The great hornbill (Buceros bicornis) is a member of the Bucerotiformes order and the Bucerotidae family. Primarily a forest-dwelling bird found in Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent, it is ecologically significant. In an agricultural setting, it is not classified as a primary pest, but it can occasionally cause damage to fruit crops located near forest borders.

Its diet consists mainly of fruits, particularly figs, but it is opportunistic. When humans cultivate fruit-bearing trees such as papaya, banana, or oil palms in or near their habitat, the great hornbill may target these crops. This behavior is typically localized and occurs during the harvest season when succulent fruits become available.

The biology of the species involves a long maturation period and specific nesting requirements. They rely on large, old-growth trees to raise their offspring. Because of their slow reproductive cycle, they are not prone to sudden population explosions, meaning their impact on agriculture remains consistent and predictable rather than devastating.

Damage caused by these birds is purely mechanical. They use their large, powerful bills to pluck and peck at fruit, often damaging more than they consume. This destruction can lead to secondary infections or insect attacks on damaged fruit, which decreases the overall marketable yield of the affected trees.

Integrated pest management strategies for the great hornbill focus on deterrence rather than eradication. Physical barriers such as netting are the most effective method for high-value crops. Additionally, using noise-emitting devices or visual deterrents (such as predator decoys) can effectively keep these birds away from vulnerable orchards without disrupting the local ecosystem.
