The genus Buphagus, commonly known as oxpeckers, belongs to the family Sturnidae within the order Passeriformes. While not plant pests, they are recognized in agricultural contexts for their direct impact on livestock, where they display behaviors that can shift from beneficial to harmful depending on the ecological balance of the environment.
The biology of oxpeckers is uniquely specialized for a life spent almost entirely on the backs of large mammals. Their life cycle is dependent on the availability of hosts, primarily wild ungulates and domestic cattle, which provide both a foraging platform and a source of nutrition derived from ectoparasites such as ticks, lice, and fly larvae.
