Common buzzard

The Common buzzard (Buteo buteo) belongs to the Accipitridae family within the order Accipitriformes. While primarily regarded as a beneficial predator for rodent control, in high-intensity farming environments, it is sometimes categorized as a nuisance species due to its interference with agricultural infrastructure and automated systems.

The biology of the buzzard involves a reproductive cycle starting in early spring. They build nests in tall trees located near open fields, which serve as their primary hunting grounds. A typical clutch consists of 2 to 4 eggs. The birds rely on thermal updrafts to glide over vast areas, effectively monitoring their territory for prey during the entire vegetative season of various crops.

Damage to agriculture is primarily physical and technological. Buzzards frequently use high-reaching agricultural infrastructure—such as irrigation sprinklers, power lines, and telecommunication masts—as perches. This behavior leads to the mechanical failure of sensitive equipment, damage to wiring, and the fouling of essential farm electronics with droppings, which can accelerate the corrosion of metal components.

The pest potential of the species is linked to the disruption of irrigation and precision farming tools. When these birds congregate in agricultural zones, the increased frequency of bird strikes and physical interference with equipment leads to costly repairs and downtime. Additionally, the presence of these raptors near poultry facilities requires farmers to invest in enhanced protective measures for livestock.

To mitigate these issues, agronomists recommend implementing integrated bird management programs. This includes the use of tactile deterrents such as spikes on perching surfaces, visual scares like predatory bird silhouettes or reflective tapes, and modern acoustic repellers. Maintaining machinery in covered areas and installing protective cages over critical control units are effective strategies to prevent damage caused by these raptors.
