Pill beetle

Pill beetles (genus Byrrhus) belong to the family Byrrhidae within the order Coleoptera. These beetles are characterized by their convex, oval bodies, which they can contract into a pill-like shape when threatened, effectively protecting their vital parts and tucking their legs into specialized grooves on their bodies.

From an agronomic perspective, pill beetles are considered minor but persistent pests of various forage crops, seedlings, and root vegetables. While they are often associated with mossy or grassy areas, their presence in agricultural fields can become problematic, particularly when their larvae feed on the roots of young plants in the spring.

The life cycle of the pill beetle involves complete metamorphosis. Adult beetles and larvae primarily reside in the soil or in the dense cover of vegetation. Females lay eggs in the soil near the host plants. The larvae, which are C-shaped, spend their entire development phase underground, feeding on root systems or decaying organic matter within the soil profile.

Damage caused by these insects often goes unnoticed until plants show symptoms of wilting or stunted growth. The larvae feed on the roots, which disrupts water and nutrient uptake. This damage is particularly critical for young, developing crops that have not yet established a robust root system, potentially leading to significant stand loss.
