Tetraneura caerulescens), belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. This insect is a specialized pest known for its unique ability to manipulate plant growth, resulting in the formation of galls — abnormal tissue developments on the leaves that serve as a sheltered environment for the colony.
Host plants. As the common name suggests, the primary host for this species is the elm tree (Ulmus). The aphid specifically targets the foliage of various elm species. While it is rarely a lethal threat to large, mature trees, its presence can significantly affect the growth rate of younger saplings and reduce the aesthetic quality of ornamental trees in urban landscapes.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Byrsocrypta caerulescens is complex, involving several generations. The cycle typically begins in early spring when stem mothers emerge from overwintering eggs. These aphids settle on young leaves, feeding and stimulating the tree to produce galls. - Implement mechanical control by pruning and disposing of affected leaves or branches if the infestation is localized.
- Promote biodiversity in the garden by encouraging natural predators such as lady beetles, lacewings, and parasitic wasps.
- Maintain tree vigor through proper irrigation and balanced fertilization to ensure the tree can withstand the stress of an infestation.
