Byrsocrypta longisetosa, commonly known as the poplar gall aphid, is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. This insect is primarily recognized as a specialized pest that infests poplar trees, inducing the formation of characteristic galls on leaf tissues.
The host plants for this species are limited to various species of the genus Populus. By feeding on the phloem sap of young leaves, the aphid stimulates the plant to produce tumor-like growths. These galls provide a protected microenvironment where the aphid colony develops safely from external environmental threats.
The biology of the species involves a complex developmental cycle. The aphids overwinter in the egg stage, hidden within the bark crevices of the host tree. With the arrival of spring, nymphs hatch and migrate to the developing buds, initiating the gall formation process through the secretion of salivary enzymes into the plant tissue.
The impact of this pest is primarily cosmetic and physiological. While small infestations may not kill a tree, heavy outbreaks significantly reduce the leaf surface area available for photosynthesis. This decline in vitality makes affected poplars more susceptible to secondary stressors such as drought, frost, and pathogenic infections.

The most effective cultural practice is the pruning and destruction of infested leaves and shoots before the aphids emerge from the galls. If chemical intervention is necessary, the application of systemic insecticides during the early spring bud-burst period is recommended to prevent the establishment of the colony.
