Cactus cyst nematode

Cactodera cacti

Description

Cactodera cacti belongs to the Heteroderidae family within the order Tylenchida. It is a highly specialized endoparasitic nematode that primarily targets the root systems of succulent plants in the Cactaceae family. This pest is a significant threat to cactus collections worldwide due to its ability to persist in the soil for extended periods.

The host range is largely limited to members of the Cactaceae family. These nematodes cause direct damage by feeding on the root tissues, which disrupts the vascular system of the cactus. As a result, the plant experiences nutrient deficiencies, wilting, and a complete cessation of growth, eventually leading to death if left untreated.

The life cycle is characterized by the formation of tough, protective cysts, which are the bodies of dead females containing eggs. These cysts can remain dormant in the soil for several years, resisting extreme dryness and temperature fluctuations. When favorable conditions and host roots are present, larvae hatch and migrate towards the roots to initiate a new cycle.

Symptoms of infestation include stunted plant growth, loss of turgor, and a pale appearance. Upon inspecting the root system, one may observe swelling or the presence of small, lemon-shaped white or brown cysts attached to the roots. The damage frequently facilitates the entry of secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, causing root rot.

  • Using high-quality, heat-sterilized potting soil.
  • Quarantining all newly acquired cactus specimens.
  • Practicing strict sanitation of tools and pots.
  • Applying systemic nematicides during the growing season if necessary.
  • Removing and destroying severely infected plants to prevent spread.

Control strategies for Cactodera cacti must focus on exclusion and integrated pest management. Since eradicating established populations of cyst nematodes is extremely difficult, prevention via proper quarantine and soil sterilization is critical. Monitoring the roots during routine repotting is the most effective way to detect early infestations before they spread to the rest of the collection.
