Caenis horaria is a species belonging to the order Ephemeroptera (mayflies) within the family Caenidae. While not a direct herbivore of crops, its presence in large numbers poses significant operational challenges for agricultural facilities that rely on ponds, canals, or rivers for irrigation and farm water supply.

The biology of this species is tied to benthic habitats. Nymphs (larvae) spend the majority of their life cycle buried in silt and organic detritus at the bottom of slow-moving or stagnant water bodies. Their ability to thrive in eutrophic environments often leads to high population densities near agricultural zones with runoff issues.

Economic damage is primarily indirect. During mass emergence events, swarms of adults can obstruct intake screens, clog pump filtration systems, and foul irrigation equipment. This results in operational downtime for irrigation networks, necessitating labor-intensive maintenance and potentially delaying water application to crops during critical growth stages.

The impact is often concentrated in coastal or riparian agricultural areas. Beyond mechanical interference, the accumulation of shed exuviae and decaying insect biomass can lead to issues with plant foliage, potentially promoting localized fungal growth or interfering with the normal physiological respiration of sensitive young plants near the water source.

Effective management focuses on aquatic habitat maintenance rather than broad-spectrum chemical control.
