Caenoplana

Caenoplana is a genus of predatory land flatworms belonging to the family Geoplanidae. Although they are not direct herbivores, they are considered significant pests in horticultural settings due to their role as invasive predators that target earthworms and other beneficial soil macrofauna, which are essential for maintaining soil structure and nutrient cycling.

Systematically, Caenoplana falls under the order Tricladida. These organisms are characterized by their elongated, dorsoventrally flattened bodies, which are typically covered in a thick layer of mucus. They possess high regenerative capabilities, making them remarkably resilient to environmental stress and difficult to eradicate once they establish a stable population within a greenhouse or garden environment.

The damage caused by these flatworms is primarily indirect but profound. By hunting earthworms, Caenoplana disrupts the biological balance of the soil. This leads to increased soil compaction, hindered drainage, and reduced aeration, which negatively impacts the root development and overall vitality of crops, potentially leading to stunted growth or increased susceptibility to root pathogens.

The life cycle of Caenoplana is highly dependent on moisture. These flatworms reproduce by laying egg cocoons in damp, sheltered areas, such as under pots, wet debris, or within the moist substrate of greenhouse benches. Their reproduction strategy allows them to proliferate quickly in controlled environments where humidity remains high year-round.

Effective mitigation and protection strategies include:

• Strict quarantine measures for incoming nursery stock, compost, and soil materials.
• Maintaining dry, clean conditions around greenhouse benches and floor areas.
• Manual inspection and removal of individuals during dusk or night hours when they are most active.
• The use of physical barriers, such as copper tape, on pots to deter these organisms from moving between containers.
