Grape leafhopper Caladonus

Caladonus coquilletti is a species of insect belonging to the family Cicadellidae within the order Hemiptera. This pest is specifically recognized for its impact on viticulture, where it causes direct physiological stress to grapevines through its feeding habits. The insect is well-adapted to warm environments, often thriving in commercial vineyards.

The primary host for this leafhopper is the grapevine (Vitis vinifera). Both nymphs and adult insects feed on the sap of the vine by piercing the plant tissue with their specialized mouthparts. This feeding activity disrupts the vascular system of the leaves, hindering the plant's ability to produce energy through photosynthesis.

The life cycle involves an incomplete metamorphosis consisting of egg, nymphal, and adult stages. Females typically deposit eggs within the leaf veins or soft green stems. Once hatched, the nymphs begin feeding immediately. Due to the favorable conditions in many vineyards, multiple generations can occur per year, leading to overlapping life stages.

Visual indicators of infestation include stippling, which appears as small, chlorotic spots on the leaf surface. As the density of the leafhopper population increases, these spots coalesce, resulting in significant yellowing or browning of the leaves. Furthermore, these insects can act as vectors for various plant pathogens, which may exacerbate the overall decline of the vineyard health.

Management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM). Key actions include:

• Utilizing yellow sticky traps for population monitoring.
• Removing weeds that provide shelter for nymphs.
• Applying systemic insecticides when threshold levels are exceeded.
