Description
Systematic position: The genus Calaphis belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. These insects are classified as specialized aphids that primarily colonize trees belonging to the Betula (birch) genus, causing significant physiological stress to the host plants during the growth season.
Host plants and damage: The primary host is the birch tree. These aphids tend to inhabit the underside of the leaves, where they establish dense colonies. By sucking phloem sap, they cause leaf curling, chlorosis, and premature senescence, which can negatively impact the growth and development of younger trees in nurseries or landscapes.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves a seasonal shift between different generations. Eggs overwinter in crevices on the bark of young twigs. In the spring, nymphs emerge to start the colony growth. Throughout the summer, several generations are produced through parthenogenesis, allowing for rapid colonization of the tree canopy before the emergence of sexual forms in the autumn.
Harmfulness: The damage caused is twofold. In addition to direct sap depletion, the excretion of honeydew provides a medium for the growth of sooty mold fungus. This black fungal layer covers the leaves, significantly interfering with photosynthesis and reducing the overall vitality and aesthetic value of the trees.
Control measures: Management strategies focus on integrated pest control.
